Frequently Asked Questions

The weather in UK

Spring (March, April and May) is a time for sudden rain showers, blossoming trees and flowering plants. Summer (June, July and August) is the UK’s warmest season, with long sunny days, occasional thunderstorms and, in some years, heatwaves. Autumn (September, October and November) can be mild and dry or wet and windy.

How to Dress in UK

The weather in the UK may be somewhat erratic. However, it usually stays within reasonable bounds.
Use a few of key hues, such as black and brown, to coordinate your outfit. Similar to New York City, practically everyone wears black in London. The dry heat in hotels will dry most of your washed items whether you travel in the fall or winter.

The wind in England is so strong that a parasol is useless. It is very recommended to have a 3/4 length raincoat with a hood. In the colder months, make sure it can be worn over a wool jacket or a bulky sweater.

Being prepared for different weather conditions by carrying items that can be easily worn or removed is essential for maintaining an air of casual elegance and comfort. Layering is a great way to stay warm, appear fashionable, and accentuate your best features.

What to Pack for UK

Layers on Layers
Pack sweaters, short-sleeved shirts, a windbreaker or raincoat and a heavier coat. For days you’re out exploring, weather can change on a dime. So, best to layer up for those outdoor adventures!

Waterproof Boots
As you can already tell, the weather is finicky and no one wants to walk through puddles! Boots, in general, are great if you’re visiting any landscapes with some rocky terrain.

Thick Socks
To keep you nice and warm in those boots! You can find some made of high-quality Irish wool in many of the gift shops in Ireland, too—a great souvenir and something you can use while you’re exploring.

Gloves/Hat
Especially during the later part of fall when temperatures drop, you’ll want to keep your hands and head warm while you’re out and about!

Type G Converter
Ireland uses type G electrical outlets, so be sure to pack a compatible converter.

Passport
Seems obvious, but we do recommend bringing a copy of your passport for back-up, too, just in case the unthinkable happens!

Backpack
Something small enough to fit in your suitcase but durable against the outdoors (read: rain!). A backpack will make toting your belongings around much easier than a purse or pocket, plus you’ll have room for any souvenirs you might collect along your outing. Note: some tours/attractions may limit the size of the bag you can bring inside, so it’s always best to check first. One of our By-Your-Side Service℠ TEAM members can help with that information, too!

Wifi Access and Mobile Connectivity in UK

Although there are plenty of mobile providers in the UK, there are only four mobile networks: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Other providers use one of the ‘big four’ networks to offer their services. These smaller providers are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO).

The share of households with Internet access in the United Kingdom grew from 9 percent in 1998 to 93 percent in 2019. In 2019, virtually all adults aged 16 to 44 years in the UK were recent internet users (99%), compared with 47% of adults aged 75 years and over; in aggregate, the third-highest in Europe.
